Greetings!

Do You REALLY Know What People Need?

As I write this, I am on my way from Boston to New York. I am on a trip with 3 of my buddies. We are going to a few baseball games. One of my friends is one of the most successful people I know. Amazing family; grounded in his beliefs; huge net worth; great health. The economy has devastated his business. He told me last night at dinner that he is likely to lose the majority, if not all, of his assets. He faces the loss of his business and his financial security.

Here I am, a person that helps people for a living, and I was speechless. This morning, as we were waiting to leave for New York, I asked him what he needed from me. He, of course, said "nothing man." I am not sure that is true, but I am sure that I respect his answer. Every bone is my body is screaming 'do something -your friend is drowning'. It occurrs to me that perhaps there is really nothing I can/should do other than exactly what I am doing, standing with him and for him. Have you ever felt that feeling of drive to help but you really didn't know what they needed even if you asked? During this difficult time in our nation's history, there are people around all of us that are struggling. As leaders, friends and family it is our responsibility to be present and aware.

Here are some things to remember:

1. Asking is sometimes enough.
2. Trust that what they tell you is their truth at that moment.
3. Don't EVER give advice unless asked. Never use clichés.
4. Stand with them even if you are silent. Respectfully let them know you are there.
5. Check in from time to time.
6. Share resources you know that may be helpful.
